Nose

Lovely aromatics of dark red berries and blackberry on the nose, with a vanillin thread from the finest French oak.

Palate

An elegant yet full-bodied Shiraz. Seamless, silky. Raspberry compote, blueberries, earthy with a hint of oaky spice fine, silky tannins, and the finish is long and lingering. This wine is a beautiful expression of the Barossa Ranges/Eden Valley terroir.

Winemaking

The grapes are handpicked from dry grown, low yielding vines planted in 1905. Naturally fermented in open 500L vats, gently hand plunged each day. The wine is matured in new French oak Hogsheads for 24 months.

AWARDS/REVIEWS.

Halliday | Dave Brooks | 96 Points GOLD

Shiraz sourced from the 1905-plantings on the Hobbs Barossa Ranges estate in Flaxman Valley. Crimson with aromas of blackberry, blueberry and satsuma plum fruits with accompanying hints of fine spice, fruitcake, dried tobacco, vanillin oak, dark chocolate, coffee grounds, fig paste and roasting meats. Full bodied and confidently walking the border of fruit richness and savoury interest with fine-grained rocky tannins and a bright mineral line. Plenty of carry on that finish, too, and there is plenty of cellaring potential here.

Wine Orbit | Sam Kim | 97 Points

Refined, complex, and alluring, the wine shows blackberry, cured meat, star anise, vanillin oak, and rich floral aromas. The concentrated palate exhibits outstanding weight and persistency, wonderfully complemented by fleshy texture and layers of polished tannins. Gorgeously structured and harmonious with a lengthy, gratifying finish. At its best: 2027 to 2043.

Barossa Shiraz from a block planted back in 1905, this is fermented in 500-litre vats with wild yeasts, before two years maturation in new French oak hogsheads. Under diam. Dark maroon, this also has an appealing, spicy and yes, even slightly peppery character. There are an array of flavours; red fruits, milk chocolate, licorice, raspberries, cloves, soy, a touch of axle grease and a flick of oak. On the palate, the wine moves to a darker end of the spectrum with bright acidity and impressive length. Enjoy over the next eight to ten years.
